Film grain overlays from real film scans
GRAINZILLA® is an independent maker of film grain overlays and cinematic video FX, built from real 35mm and 8mm film scans plus digital grain, delivered as 4K and 1080p ProRes .mov files for Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, After Effects and CapCut. You drag an overlay onto the track above your footage, set the blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light, and your digital video picks up the moving, organic texture of motion picture film. No plugins, no installation, fast renders.
What is a film grain overlay?
A film grain overlay is a video clip of pure grain texture, usually on a mid-gray or black background, that you layer on top of digital footage with a blend mode. Digital sensors record clean, noiseless images; film records light on silver halide crystals, and those crystals show up as grain that shifts randomly every frame. Adding a grain overlay brings back that texture, hides banding in skies and gradients, helps mixed footage cut together, and gives the image the feel of a film print.
Why real film scans look better than generated grain
Grain scanned from real film has irregular particle shapes, sizes and density that no two frames repeat, so it never reads as a pattern. Generated grain is uniform by nature. That is why Grainzilla builds its packs from scans: every Grainzilla grain overlay is a real film scan unless its file name says DIGITAL. The 4K Film Grain Pack contains 8 real film scans out of 9 overlays; the 1080p Film Grain Pack contains 4 real scans plus 5 digital grain variants for when you want a cleaner, more even texture.

All overlays are QuickTime .mov files in Apple ProRes 422, the professional editing codec, not the compressed H.264 most grain overlays online are delivered in, which smears the fine detail grain is made of. They work in any editor that reads ProRes: Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Avid Media Composer and CapCut desktop. Every purchase is a one-time payment with a commercial license for unlimited end products.
Apply grain in one click with Grainzilla Hero Studio
Grainzilla Hero Studio is a free panel for Premiere Pro and After Effects that browses your grain and overlay folders, previews an effect on the selected clip, and applies it matched to the clip length with your chosen blend mode and intensity. It works with Grainzilla packs and with any other overlay files you own.

Film grain overlay FAQ
What is a film grain overlay?
A film grain overlay is a video clip of grain texture that you layer on top of digital footage with a blend mode such as Overlay or Soft Light. It adds the moving, organic texture of motion picture film so clean digital video looks like it was shot on film.
Is Grainzilla grain real film grain?
Most of it is. Every Grainzilla grain overlay is a real film scan unless its file name says DIGITAL. The 4K Film Grain Pack has 8 real film scans out of 9 overlays, and the 1080p Film Grain Pack has 4 real scans plus 5 digital grain variants.
Which editing software works with Grainzilla overlays?
Any editor that reads ProRes 422 .mov files: Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Avid Media Composer and CapCut desktop, among others.
Can I use Grainzilla overlays in commercial projects?
Yes. Every purchase includes a commercial license for unlimited end products, including client work, films, music videos, ads and YouTube. You may not redistribute or resell the source files.
Are there free film grain overlays?
Yes. Grainzilla offers a free 35mm digital grain overlay, VHS Bad Noise, a War film look and 4K letterbox frames, plus the free Grainzilla Hero Studio panel for Premiere Pro and After Effects.
Why ProRes and not H.264?
Grainzilla overlays are Apple ProRes 422 .mov files, a professional editing codec. Most film grain overlays sold or shared online are compressed H.264, a delivery codec that throws away fine detail and predicts frames from each other, which smears exactly the random, frame-by-frame detail grain is made of. ProRes keeps every frame at a high bitrate, so the grain keeps its structure, plays smoothly on the timeline and survives grading and re-export.
